3 Reasons You Have “Indecidis”
While I was going through The Life-Changing Art of Self-Brain Surgery, Dr. Lee introduced a word he made up.
“Indecidis.” (pronounced in-dee-side-us)
Meaning: the inflammatory or disease state of being in indecision.
I laughed. I thought that was hilarious.
But also… ouch.
Because it really DOES feel like you have a disease when you stay in indecision for a long time!!
It drains your energy.
It takes up all your brain space.
And it just feels AWFUL.
As Christians, we do NOT have to live with “indecidis.”
In fact, we should NOT be getting chronic cases of it.
The Bible tells us flat out in 2 Timothy 1:7:
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
(NOT a spirit of indecision!!)
Here are the top 3 reasons I see why people stay stuck in indecision:
#1 They don’t want to be wrong, they want to get it “perfect.”
I know you don’t want to hear this, but…
We are going to get it wrong sometimes.
End of story.
Yet we put ourselves through a mental American Ninja Warrior course trying to figure out how to move forward with zero mess.
Meanwhile…
God already knew you would be messy on your way to fulfilling what He’s called you to do.
He factored that in.
It is WAY more exhausting trying to think your way into a perfect decision…
Than it is to just:
Make the decision.
Learn from it.
Adjust.
And go again.
Please do NOT use your precious mental capacity trying to figure out how to never be messy.
God did not design you that way.
God doesn’t need to learn but He created you to learn.
So do it!!
Make the decision.
Analyze what you learned.
Adjust.
Grow.
#2 We want to please people more than we want to please God
Ugh, you guys…
This one is SO DANGEROUS.
Please memorize this verse:
Proverbs 29:25
Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but he who trusts in the LORD is kept safe.
More often than we realize (or want to admit), we delay making a decision because we’re trying to figure out how to “ kind of” obey God…
Without making waves.
Without upsetting anyone.
Without anyone thinking differently about us.
So we waste all this energy doing psychological gymnastics trying to cover every base.
That is NOT how God asks us to operate.
And it is definitely NOT the example Jesus gave us.
Jesus made people mad.
He cared far more about doing what His Father asked Him to do than keeping religious people comfortable.
You cannot fully obey God and keep everyone happy.
It has never worked that way in the past and it will never work that way in the future!
#3 We don’t want to be responsible for the outcome
Oh… this is a big one, right?!?
But here’s the truth:
We are really overstepping when we think this way.
I heard someone say once:
“There are three types of business: my business, your business, and God’s business. Mind your business.”
OUR business = obedience.
GOD’S business = outcome.
And His outcome may look VERY different than what you expect!!
Quick personal example:
When I started working from home, my goal was SMALL.
I just wanted to make a little extra money so I could pay for things I was trying to hopefully feel a little better.
That was it.
But GOD…
God’s plan was to connect me with the supplement company that helped restore my health.
God’s plan was to use that to impact thousands and thousands of other people.
God’s plan was for me to meet my older son’s future wife through that company.
Like… what?!
God and I are not thinking on the same level and I am SO grateful for that!!
Because I shudder to think what would NOT have happened…
If I had stayed stuck in indecision.
It would have affected FAR more than just me.
Now let’s talk about you…
What is NOT going to happen…
If you don’t do what God is asking you to do?
On this side of heaven, we may never fully know.
But I can guarantee you this:
It affects FAR more than just you.
Even if it looks like it’s just about you…
(It never is.)
Friend…
MAKE THE DECISION.
Get after it!!
Stop calling it “waiting on God” when deep down you know it’s fear.
Stop overthinking your way into exhaustion.
Stop trying to control outcomes that were never your responsibility anyway.
You don’t need more time, you need to move.
What is ONE decision you have been putting off?
Make it.
Today.
In passionate purpose,
Dorothy
